It's Whit Friday today!

V concise because I'm writing this on my phone from the bus:

Today is Whit Friday. If you're in the north west and have never been to this event, please consider it! Explanation is here and details of this year's event are here. Proper post tomorrow, I promise!

One day all you Facebook fans will realise why I avoid it, and I'll look on smugly :-)

Ah, but I remember the Whit week walks-it was the only time I ever had a new dress. Walking behind the banners and the bands playing was pretty special. Depending on where you lived you could get to walk one day, and go to see someone else's later in the week. In these days of political correctness, falling church attendances, etc, 'Whit Week Walks' seem to have become the bands only. Not that that is a bad thing, but it does lose something of the spectacle of what my grandmother always referred to as 'going to see the scholars walking'
Some of the few photographs of me as a child are from Whit week. How times change!

I love the story about the new dress! They do still have Whit walks (i.e. without the bands) but I agree the bands get more publicity.
